Sometimes the best photos happen when things don’t go as planned. For these Richmond engagement photos, we had originally planned to meet at Maymont for a sunset session in the gardens. But with some unexpected closures, we decided to pivot at the last-minute to Monument Avenue – and we’re so glad we did!
With its historic charm and tree-lined street glowing with fall colors, Monument Ave turned out to be the perfect backdrop. The street was buzzing with activity, but not even a passing firetruck could steal the spotlight from these two. In fact, one of our favorite moments was a spontaneous dip kiss right as a firetruck blazed through the intersection. It was one of those blink-and-you-might-miss-it bursts of magic.
From the moment we started shooting, Allison and Ryan were laughing and joking together. These two are high school sweethearts with over a decade of love behind them, and it translated into playful, easy energy. It’s clear to see that they share the kind of love that they just get each other.
One thing you’ll notice in the photos below is how natural movement brings the images to life. Walking hand-in-hand, spinning into a hug, or playing in the leaves are all prompts that I use to help the session feel relaxed and authentic. The movement not only adds energy and emotion, but also invites my clients to feel more comfortable in front of the camera and soften any awkwardness to let your real connection shine through.
